What Are Iso-megane? Diving Goggles Used by Ama Divers

OCS ARCHIVE / OBJECT / AMA DIVING TOOL

What are iso-megane?

Iso-megane are diving goggles used by ama divers to see and protect their eyes underwater.

OCS reconstruction of Shino Hamasaki putting on iso-megane before an ama dive in Anori in 1972

A tool for seeing underwater.

In ama work, underwater vision is part of the job. The diver must read the rock, locate catch and coordinate her movements with a breath-hold dive and a gathering tool. Mie Prefecture’s cultural materials identify iso-megane as equipment worn by ama divers to protect the eyes and make underwater work possible. They are not decorative “old-fashioned goggles”; they belong to the technology of work.

How iso-megane enter the workflow.

  1. The diver puts on the goggles before entering the water.
  2. She descends and uses the view through the lens to identify rock and marine catch.
  3. She combines vision with experience, body position and a hand tool such as the kaginomi.
  4. She returns to the surface, restores her breathing and prepares for the next dive.

Goggles alone do not create the skill. They work with breath control, accumulated knowledge of the fishing ground and the hands that gather.

A changing form, not one timeless design.

The Mie Prefecture ama customs survey records the spread of underwater goggles in Toba and Shima from the Meiji period and the development of several forms, including early two-lens goggles and later single-lens types. For a 1972 reconstruction, OCS treats iso-megane as a historical technology with a history of change, not as a generic prop that looked identical in every district and decade.

1972 Anori: what is supported?

FACT: Iso-megane were an established tool in ama fishing in Toba and Shima well before 1972, and Anori is among the districts associated with ama fishing.

RECONSTRUCTION: The exact product form, fit, surface condition and the position in which Shino puts on the goggles in OCS C018 are not presented as a documented artifact or action from a specific day in 1972.

C018 — putting on the goggles.

In Shino EP01, C018 is the short transition between travel by communal boat and the work of diving. It shows how an object changes the body from passenger to diver.
