Ooku in Edo Castle

The Ooku formed the innermost residential and working world of Edo Castle’s Honmaru palace, associated with the shogun’s wife and family and with the women who served inside the quarters.

Where was the Ooku?

The Honmaru palace combined government and residence. Sources from the Tokyo Metropolitan Library and Edo-Tokyo Museum distinguish the public Omote, the shogun’s Nakaoku, and the women’s inner quarters. The Ooku was not simply a single luxurious room. It was a connected system of residential, service, administrative and circulation spaces.

Three spatial functions

Early castle plans and later explanatory records describe three broad zones: Gotenmuki, containing high-status residential and formal rooms; Nagatsubone-muki, the living quarters of female attendants; and Hiroshiki-muki, where male Hiroshiki officials handled administration, security and supervision connected to the Ooku.

A workplace as well as a residence

The Ooku is often remembered through rank, ceremony and political drama. OCS is interested in another layer: people carried textiles, prepared rooms, transmitted instructions, maintained routes, handled objects, waited, cleaned, stored and coordinated ordinary work. Those repeated actions made the institution function.

Early Edo caution

The physical Ooku changed repeatedly through rebuilding and fire. A plan labeled “Kan’ei-period Ooku” in the Tokyo Metropolitan Library collection is now understood to depict a later Manji-period reconstruction. OCS therefore does not project every later room arrangement backward into 1640. Early-Edo scenes use the evidence as architectural vocabulary while keeping uncertain details explicitly reconstructed.
